Holmesy’s Breeders’ Cup Day Two Cheat Sheet
You made it through day one, now comes the fun part, day two. Take a look at Mr. Holmes’ Saturday race notes.
Alright, the first day is over! Hopefully, you made some coin. If not, that’s cool too, because it’s a new day and there’s money waiting to be made.
Today we will see some of the “superstar” horses. Yesterday’s action was the equivalence of watching the College Football National Championship game and all the bowl games leading up to it.
Today’s action turns things up a bit. There’s a lot to look out for, so let’s get down to it.
The rundown
Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint
7 furlongs for fillies & mares 3 and up
Purse: $1 million
Post time: noon Saturday
Post position — horse — trainer — morning-line odds
1. Selcourt, John Sadler, 4–1
2. Miss Sunset, Jeffrey Bonde, 15–1
3. Happy Like a Fool, Wesley Ward, 20–1
4. Kirby’s Penny, Wesley Ward, 30–1
5. Golden Mischief, Brad Cox, 10–1
6. Chalon, Arnaud Delacour, 15–1
7. Skye Diamonds, William Spawr, 10–1
8. Mia Mischief, Steve Asmussen, 15–1
9. Stormy Embrace, Kathleen O’Connell, 20–1
10. Highway Star, Rodrigo Ubillo, 20–1
11. Finley’sluckycharm, Bret Calhoun, 10–1
12. Anonymity, Richard Mandella, 15–1
13. Marley’s Freedom, Bob Baffert, 8–5
14. Shamrock Rose, Mark Casse, 20–1
Race notes: If Marley’s Freedom was a stock, she’d be the hottest thing since Apple. She has already earned north of $600k USD. The filly was born to run. In the Ketel One Ballerina Stakes at Saratoga, Marley’s Freedom gave it her all and then some more, taking a three-length lead down the final stretch, and notching a first-place finish.
With Marley’s Freedom post position and Mike Smith on her back, you gotta like her chance at winning this race. Selcourt might have something to say about that. She beat her in the 2018 Santa Monica Stakes in a “brilliant performance”.
Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint
5 1/2 furlongs on turf for 3-year-olds and up
Post Time: 12:38 p.m. Saturday
Purse: $1 million
1. Ruby Notion (Darrin Miller) — 20–1
2. Bucchero (Tim Glyshaw) — 10–1
3. Hembree (Michael Maker) — 20–1
4. Vision Perfect (Jason Servis) — 15–1
5. Disco Partner (Christophe Clement) — 7–2
6. Rainbow Heir (Jason Servis) — 12–1
7. Lost Treasure (IRE) (Aidan O’Brien) — 20–1
8. Chanteline (Steven Asmussen) — 15–1
9. Stormy Liberal (Peter Miller) — 4–1
10. Havana Grey (GB) (Karl Burke) — 20–1
11. World of Trouble (Jason Servis) — 6–1
12. Richard’s Boy (Peter Miller) — 12–1
13. Will Call (Brad Cox) — 20–1
14. Conquest Tsunami (Peter Miller) — 6–1
15. Insta Erma (Richard Baltas) — 3–1
Race notes: This one is going to be tough to call. Disco Partner and Stormy Liberal will be the ones setting the pace. Expect Conquest Tsunami to be right up there with them. World of Trouble will take a shot at the inside.
In my opinion, this field is wide open. Literally, anything can happen since there’s no bona fide favourite. I can’t help but imagine an exciting race. This would be the one to take a chance on a longshot like Rainbow Hier or Will Call.
Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile
1 mile for 3-year-olds and up
Purse: $1 million
Post time: 1:16 p.m. Saturday
1. City of Light, Michael McCarthy , 5–2
2. Trigger Warning, Michael Rone, 20–1
3. Isotherm, Philip D’Amato, 20–1
4. Seven Trumpets, Dale Romans, 15–1
5. Awesome Slew, Mark Casse, 15–1
6. Seeking the Soul, Dallas Stewart, 5–1
7. Firenze Fire, Jason Servis, 6–1
8. Bravazo, D. Wayne Lukas, 20–1
9. Giant Expectations, Peter Eurton, 15–1
10. Catalina Cruiser, John Sadler, 8–5
Race notes: The obvious favourites in this race are City of Light and Catalina Cruiser. Both horses had going showings in their last race. City of Light managed to finish second behind Whitmore. Some argue the horse could have had a better showing if it was not stuck inside on the rail. Catalina Cruiser made easy work of her race in the 2018 Pat O‘Brien Stakes.
Another horse to keep an eye on is Bravazo. The horse has had some good races that make you wonder if it could pull off a stunning upset. At the very least, I think Bravazo can show.
Breeders’ Cup Maker’s Mark Filly & Mare Turf
1 3/8 mile on turf for fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Post Time: 2:04 p.m. Saturday
Purse: $2 million
1. Fourstar Crook (Chad Brown) — 5–1
2. Thais (FR) (Chad Brown) — 20–1
3. Wild Illusion (GB) (Charlie Appleby) — 7–2
4. Paved (Michael McCarthy) — 20–1
5. Princess Yaiza (IRE) (Gavin Cromwell) — 30–1
6. Sistercharlie (IRE) (Chad Brown) — 3–1
7. Smart Choice (ARG) (Todd Pletcher) — 30–1
8. Fuhriously Kissed (Anthony Quartarolo) — 30–1
9. A Raving Beauty (GER) (Chad Brown) — 10–1
10. Magic Wand (IRE) (Aidan O’Brien) — 5–1
11. Mom’s On Strike (Joe Sharp) — 20–1
12. Santa Monica (GB) (Chad Brown) — 15–1
13. Athena (IRE) (Aidan O’Brien) — 15–1
14. Eziyra (IRE) (Dermot Weld) — 15–1
- NOTE: Chad Brown’s five horses in this field marks the first time since 1988 that one trainer has had five horses in one Breeders’ Cup race.
Race notes: Sistercharlie is going to be a filly to look out for. Don’t be fooled so will Fourstar Crook, Wild Illusion, and Magic Wand. This race is filled with talent. Something tells me bettors will put most of the late money on Sistercharlie. Making it more feasible to put money on the three later horses.
Let's just say Chad Brown might be able to get a trifecta with all his horses in the race.
Breeders’ Cup Sprint
6 furlongs for 3-year-olds and up
Purse: $2 million
Post time: 2:46 p.m. Saturday.
1. Whitmore, Ron Moquett, 6–1
2. Promises Fulfilled, Dale Romans, 6–1
3. B Squared, Doug O’Neill, 20–1
4. Warrior’s Club, D. Wayne Lukas, 15–1
5. Imperial Hint, Luis Carvajal Jr., 9–5
6. Always Sunshine, Edward Allard, 20–1
7. Distinctive B, Peter Miller, 12–1
8. Limousine Liberal, Ben Colebrook, 6–1
9. Roy H, Peter Miller, 5–2
Race notes: Imperial Hint and Roy H are the favourites. I am shocked to be saying that because I feel that Limousine Liberal and Whitmore are solid horses. Nevertheless, this is good for the bettors that would like to put their money on them because they will be buying them with good odds.
Promises Fulfilled might be another horse that’ll be flying under the radar. I’m not going to lie, I don’t really see him winning. I more so see him placing at best, which isn’t terrible.
Breeders’ Cup Mile
1 mile on turf for 3-year-olds and up
Post Time: 3:36 p.m. Saturday
Purse: $2 million
1. One Master (GB) (William John Haggas) — 12–1
2. Next Shares (Richard Baltas) — 10–1
3. Happily (IRE) (Aidan O’Brien) — 15–1
4. Polydream (IRE) (Freddy Head) — 5–1
5. Oscar Performance (Brian Lynch) — 6–1
6. Almanaar (GB) (Chad Brown) — 12–1
7. Expert Eye (GB) (Michael Stoute) — 8–1
8. I Can Fly (GB) (Aidan O’Brien) — 10–1
9. Hunt (IRE) (Philip D’Amato) — 30–1
10. Catapult (John Sadler) — 6–1
11. Lightning Spear (GB) (David Simcock) — 20–1
12. Analyze It (Chad Brown) — 6–1
13. Gustav Klimt (IRE) (Aidan O’Brien) — 10–1
14. Mustashry (GB) (Michael Stoute) — 15–1
15. Divisidero (Kelly Rubley) — 30–1
16. Clemmie (IRE) (Aidan O’Brien) — 30–1
Race notes: I really like Polydream and Oscar Performance in this race. I’ve got to see Oscar Performance up close and personal at the Woodbine Mile. Boy, can that horse race. Same goes with Polydream. Oscar Performance led the race gate-to-wire.
This is one of those races where you can’t wait to see how it finishes. I know I sound like a broken record when I say this, but there is a lot of talent in this race.
Breeders’ Cup Distaff
1 1/8 miles for fillies and mares 3 and up
Purse: $2 million
Post time: 4:16 p.m. Saturday
1. Champagne Problems, Ian Wilkes, 12–1
2. Abel Tasman, Bob Baffert, 7–2
3. La Force (GER), Patrick Gallagher, 10–1
4. Mopotism, Doug O’Neill, 30–1
5. Wonder Gadot, Mark Casse, 15–1
6. Verve’s Tale, Barclay Tagg, 30–1
7. Midnight Bisou, Steve Asmussen, 6–1
8. Vale Dori (ARG), Bob Baffert, 12–1
9. Wow Cat (CHI), Chad Brown, 8–1
10. Blue Prize (ARG), Ignacio Correas, 6–1
11. Monomoy Girl, Brad Cox, 2–1
Race notes: Monomoy Girl is my pick to win the race. Abel Tasman may give her some problems, but I expect she will overcome those and get herself into the winner’s circle. Monomoy Girl’s last race was a dominant win at Parx Racetrack.
Keep an eye out for Wonder Gadot. She was the Canadian Triple Crown Champion. That’s a special accomplishment, and she may be poised to turn a few heads.
Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf
1 1/2 mile on turf for 3-year-olds and up
Post Time: 4:56 p.m. Saturday
Purse: $4 million
1. Talismanic (GB) (Andre Fabre) – 12–1
2. Enable (GB) (John Gosden) – 1–1
3. Channel Maker (William Mott) – 12–1
4. Robert Bruce (CHI) (Chad Brown) – 10–
5. Magical (IRE) (Aidan O’Brien) – 10–1
6. Arklow (Brad Cox) – 30–1
7. Glorious Empire (IRE) (James Lawrence II) – 12–1
8. Liam the Charmer (Michael McCarthy) – 30–1
9. Quarteto de Cordas (BRZ) (Ian Wilkes) – 30–1
10. Hi Happy (ARG) (Todd Pletcher) – 20–1
11. Sadler’s Joy (Thomas Albertrani) – 20–1
12. Waldgeist (GB) (Andre Fabre) – 9–2
13. Hunting Horn (IRE) (Aidan O’Brien) – 30–1
Race notes: If I had my way, I’d try my best to get Enable some more bettor friendly odds. This horse has done a lot to impress the horse racing community. A win in Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. In 10 races the horse has taken part in, it has won nine of them. That is darn impressive. I don’t think this race will be much different than any of the last races. Below is some of Enable’s handy work.
Breeders’ Cup Classic
1 ¼ miles for 3-year-olds and up
Purse: $6 million
Post time: 5:44 p.m. Saturday
- Thunder Snow (IRE), Saeed bin Suroor, 12–1
2. Roaring Lion, John Gosden, 20–1
3. Catholic Boy, Jonathan Thomas, 8–1
4. Gunnevera, Antonio Sano, 20–1
5. Lone Sailor, Tom Amoss, 30–1
6. McKinzie, Bob Baffert, 6–1
7. West Coast, Bob Baffert, 5–1
8. Pavel, Doug O’Neill, 20–1
9. Mendelssohn, Aidan O’Brien, 12–1
10. Yoshida (JPN), Bill Mott, 10–1
11. Mind Your Biscuits, Chad Summers, 6–1
12. Axelrod, Michael McCarthy, 30–1
13. Discreet Lover, Uriah St. Lewis, 20–1
14. Accelerate, John Sadler, 5–2
15. Collected, Bob Baffert, 30–1
16. Toast of New York, Jamie Osborne, 20–1
Race notes: I like Accelerate in this race. The horse can run accelerate. See what I did there? Catholic Boy is another horse I like. I don’t love him, but I’ll keep an eye on him, especially if the priest seems to favour him a bit more than the others… Ouch to soon?
